Born in Virginia into slavery, he escaped with his mother, brother and uncle in 1862 during the second battle of Bull Run. He worked in Alexandria, Virginia, as a Quartermaster. In 1863, being only 16 years of age, he enlisted into the Union Army as an 18-year old. He fought with Company E 1st U.S. Colored Infantry in Virginia and North Carolina and mustered out in 1865.

He settled in Rossville, Maryland in 1870 which is now the Muirkirk community. He joined and became a prominent member of Queen's Chapel Church and taught Sunday school classes. He also served as a class leader and trustee.
