Businessman. He founded the Lorillard Tobacco Company, the oldest tobacco company in the U.S. He was also a prominent thoroughbred horse owner and breeder, and his horse Iroquois became the first American-owned and bred horse to win a European classic race. He owned the sprawling Rancocas Stud in Jobstown, New Jersey, which remains intact today. There is a common myth that he invented the tuxedo, but this has been disproven. He developed 13,000 acres near Tuxedo Lake in New York into a luxury retreat named Tuxedo Park.
