Samuel was the son of Joseph France and Fanny Widener.

After Fanny's death, the family relocated to Clay Co, IN. Samuel served in the Civil War in Company E of the 31st Indiana Infantry from Sept 5, 1861 through December 28, 1865. He was married to Ruthanna Priscilla Wheeler on June 21, 1866 in Clay Co, IN. After her death in 1870, he remarried to Rebecca Stiner on Feb 22, 1872 in Clay county.

Samuel France, an old soldier of Darwin, died Thursday at 1 p.m. of heart disease. He had been afflicted for a long time, but on Wednesday he seemed to feel much better and made some arrangments to attend to some business the following day. He seemed to feel pretty well when he went to bed that evening. Thursday morning he could not be waked, and continued unconscious till death came as noted above. The funeral was held at 10 a.m. Saturday.
