Freeman COFFIN was born in Edgartown, Dukes Co, Massachusetts but moved probably to Goshen, Hampshire Co, Massachusetts as that is where his first wife Eunice WILLIAMS was from. She died there in 1826 and Freeman married (2nd) Hannah COFFIN 1d 1m 1828 in the neighboring town of Cummington. By Hannah, Freeman was the father of three children: George Williams COFFIN, Rosamond (COFFIN) FULLER, and Ellen W. COFFIN who were all born in Cummington.

Around 1835 Freeman & Hannah moved there family west to Gorham Twsp, Fulton Co, Ohio following Hannah's brother-in-law and sister Gorham & Alethea (WHITMARSH) COTTRELL. Indeed Gorham Twsp and the town of Gorham within it was actually named after Gorham COTTRELL although the town of Gorham was later renamed Fayette. Freeman & Hannah were still in Gorham Twsp in 1850 according to federal census returns but between that time and 1854 Freeman moved west to Coffins Grove Twsp, Delaware Co, Iowa to live near his younger brother Clement COFFIN. It is also possible that he moved there because of Elizabeth Williams (COFFIN) BAKER. She appears to have been Freeman's daughter by his first wife Eunice. Elizabeth remained in Coffins Grove Twsp, Delaware Co, Iowa and died there in 1859. Since Freeman's will was probated in Fulton Co, Ohio it appears that he probably went there to visit his brother and daughter and was legally a resident of Fulton Co, Ohio and not Delaware Co, Iowa at the time of his death.
