Mrs. Emma Leonard, One of the Outstanding Women
of the City Passed Away Today.
IN FRAIL HEALTH FOR PAST 4 YEARS
Just a month from the day when the Grim Reaper invader her home and claimed the life of her son-in-law, J. Leicester Spooner, Mrs. Emma Leonard, one of the best known residents of the city, died suddenly at 2:30 a.m., today at the family home, 508 East Lincolnway.
Her passing, while a great shock to relatives and friends, was not unexpected. For the last four years she had been in declining health, with her condition becoming very critical the last few months. Angina pectoris was the cause of death.
Mrs. Leonard, whose maiden name was Emma Denney, was born in Carroll county, Ohio, on March 29, 1858, and moved with her parents to Lake county when a young girl. Her marriage to Alva Leonard, one of leading farmers of Porter county, took place at Lowell on September 8, 1878. Since that time she resided in Porter county. Mr. Leonard died in 1901.
Surviving is one daughter, Mrs. J. L. Spooner, two grandsons, Alva Leonard and James William Spooner, of this city. One daughter, Mrs. Cora Leonard Small, was killed in a railroad accident at Malden in 1916. She also leaves one brother, John Denney, director of public works, at Olympia, Wash., and one sister, Mrs. Harriett Banks, of Everett, Wash.
Mrs. Leonard was a member of the Methodist church, the Order of Eastern Star, and W. C. T. U.
She was a woman of great force of character and deep religious conviction. Mrs. Leonard was one of the friendliest of souls, with a keen sense of humor and a zest for life.
