On the stone he is called Janus Rhynhoud, while the correct spelling was Janis Reijnhout. He was a son of Jan Reijnhout and Pieternella Tiessen.
At the side of the stone is carved in Japanese characters the name of a Japanese woman: "This stone is erected by Yatsuhashi of the House Ofujiya on February 13th of the year of the Horse, Meiji 3". Ofuji-ya was a brothel and he may have died there.
