She was the daughter of General James John Mackall of Calvert County, Maryland and Mary Hance, daughter of Benjamin and Mary Hutchins (Mary's parents were Francis Hutchins and Elizabeth Burrage).
Not 15 years of age, she eloped, being married at Gov. Robert Bowie's. Her father's plantation house "God's Grace" was surrounded by a brick wall in which Robert helped her climb over with a ladder.
She died at the plantation Mattaponi and is buried beside her husband.

James John Bowie was born in 1785, named after his grandfather, Col. James John Mackall. On May 3, 1808 he was appointed first lieutenant, United States Light Dragoon's, and was ordered with his regiment to New Orleans. A year later he became involved in an altercation with Lieut. D. H. Hage of the same command. A duel was fought on May 5, 1809. Bowie fell at the first fire; Hage was wounded but recovered and was promoted to a Captain during the war with Great Britain in 1812-1814. The New Orleans Gazette of May 18, 1809 carries a lengthy notice of the duel, and a tribute to the deceased by, "A Brother Soldier"
Robert William Bowie was born March 3, 1787 and was married on March 28, 1818 to Catherine Lansdale. He died in 1848.
Caroline Bowie died at the age of 14.
R. H. Bowie died in infancy.
