A retired operator from Cargill with 37 years of service and a resident of Port Allen, he died at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, at his home surrounded by his family and his dog. He was 78, a U.S. Air Force veteran with eight years of service including the Korean War, a native of Alto, Texas, and a graduate of Port Barre High School. Visiting at Wilbert Funeral Home, Port Allen, on Friday, Jan. 8, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. until funeral mass at 1 p.m., celebrated by the Rev. John Moyers. Interment in Grace Memorial Park in Plaquemine. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shirley Emerson DeJean, of Port Allen; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bobby DeJean and Joan Cormier DeJean, of Prairieville, and Patrick DeJean and Francis T. DeJean, of Port Allen; a sister, Margaret "Bertie" Ramsey and friend Alvin Ponder, of Alto; four grandchildren, Andrew DeJean and girlfriend Molly Finley, of Denham Springs, Sarah DeJean, of Central, Caitlin DeJean and Alexander DeJean; three sisters-in-law and their spouses, Bonnie Schiebel, Linda Emerson Straight and John, all of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Doris DeJean Griffith, of Plaquemine; a brother-in-law and spouse, Larry Emerson and Melanie, of Lone Grove, Okla.; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Ashton DeJean and Evy Hooks DeJean; two brothers, Albert and Arthur DeJean; and a sister, Ethel DeJean Guillory. Pallbearers will be sons, grandsons and nephews, Sanford and James DeJean. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
