Daniel Bate Junior of Des Moines, Iowajoined the Marine Corps 17 June, 1942 from Nebraska. Completed recruit training in the 6th Recruit Training Battalion, MCB San Diego, CA. Assigned to Training Squadron Eight, Marine Aviation Detachment, NAS Jacksonville, FL. Promoted to Private First Class. Assigned to Marine Utility Squadron 153 (VMJ 153), NAS San Diego. Promoted to Corporal. March, 1943 embarked ship at San Diego for overseas.

Assigned to the Ground Defense Force Det of Marine Utility Squadron 152, (VMJ 152), Marine Air Group 25, (MAG 25) at Tontouta, New Caledonia. VMJ 152 was part of SCAT (South Pacific Combat Air Transport). VMJ 152 operated in the Solomon Islands flying cargo, evacuating wounded from the Russell Islands, New Georgia, Bougainville, Los Negros and many other islands.

Promoted to Sergeant then trained and qualified as an Aviation Navigator (MOS 387-A)and put on flight status. 19 May, 1944 lost on an Air Mission from Bougainville to Guadalcanal. The last radio contact was on take off and the plane never arrived at Guadalcanal.

Body not recovered.

Declared Dead by the Secretary of the Navy.
