She was employed as a singer, a private teacher, and as private secretary to a wealthy woman in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. She never married.

Mabelle Tennant said that the Van Eps family in the United States went back before the Revolutionary War and that one of the Van Eps served in the Revolutionary Army, and thus the family were eligible to be in the Sons or Daughters of the Revolution.

Richard H Rhode remembers Mabelle Tennant coming to visit his Grandfather, her only living brother, Robert Hamilton Tennant, in the 1950s, when he was a child. She was in her 70s then, and the Rhode and Spicer children respectfully called her "Aunt Mabel," but were a bit afraid of her. She was a little old lady, wrinkled, and she would sit in a chair on the lawn of Grandfather's home at Pike Lake (north of Duluth, Minnesota) wrapped in a sweater in the summertime, and converse with Elizabeth Tennant Rhode and Jean Tennant Spicer, and with Grandfather. Interestingly enough, she and Grandfather both lived to age 94.
