War Memorial. The Maiwand Lion commemorates the 329 men of the 66th Berkshire Regiment who died in the battles of Girishk Maiwand and Kandahar and in the Afghanistan Campaigns of 1878 to 1880. The regiment faced an Afghan army ten times its own size and lost half of their number. The monument was erected in 1886 in Forbury Gardens, Reading, a public park that occupies the site of the demolished nave of Reading Abbey. At nine and a half metres long and weighing sixteen tons, it is one of the world's largest cast iron statues. The lion stands on a terracotta plinth which carries tablets recording the names of the fallen. It was created by local sculptor George Blackall Simonds, and cast by Young and Company of Pimlico.
