Father Theodore Bradower, T.O.R., 86, died Thursday at St. Francis Friary, Loretto.

He was born in Akron, Ohio, son of the late John and Anna (Wolfensberger) Bradower. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Jeanne Diehl. Father Theodore is survived by his community of Franciscan Friars.

Father Theodore entered the Franciscan community of the Province of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis as a novice at Sacred Heart Novitiate, Loretto, July 7, 1942. He professed his first vows of poverty, chastity and obedience at Mount Assisi Friary, Loretto, July 8, 1943, and made his solemn profession of vows, also at Mount Assisi Friary, on July 8, 1946. He was ordained to the Priesthood May 20, 1950, at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Altoona by the late Bishop Richard T. Guilfoyle, Bishop of Altoona-Johnstown.

Father Theodore graduated from St. Francis University in 1946 and completed his theological studies at St. Francis Seminary, Loretto, in 1950. He earned his Ph.D. in philosophy from the Angelicum University in Rome in 1953 and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh, in 1957. From 1953-73, Father Theodore served as a philosophy professor at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio, and from 1970-74, served the university as dean and executive vice president. He was registrar and local prefect of studies at St. Francis Seminary, Loretto, from 1974-80. From 1980-83, he was involved in the long-range planning programs at St. Francis University, Loretto, and Franciscan University of Steubenville. In 1983, he became treasurer of St. Francis Seminary in Toronto. From 1984-2008 he ministered at St. Andrews Church in Fort Worth, Texas, and for some of those years, he also served on the marriage tribunal of the Diocese of Fort Worth.

A member of the Board of Trustees of St. Francis University from 1974-86, Father Theodore also served on the boards of trustees of St. Francis Seminary, Loretto, and St. Francis Prep School in Spring Grove, Pa. He also served his Province as local minister of Holy Spirit Friary in Steubenville, as a member of the Graduate Study Review Board, and as coordinator of long-range planning.

Throughout his many years of ministry at educational institutions and parishes, Father Theodore remained a faithful friar and priest. He was a scholar, always interested in enhancing his own education. He enjoyed preaching, conducting retreats and parish missions, and he served as a spiritual director to many. He also was an accomplished artist, specializing in painting and sculpture, and he enjoyed opera and other classical music.

Friends will be received from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at the chapel of St. Francis Friary, Loretto. A vigil service will be held at the chapel at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, also at the Friary chapel, with the Very Rev. Christian R. Oravec, T.O.R., Minister Provincial of the Province of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, as principal celebrant. After the funeral Mass, burial will take place at Franciscan Friars Cemetery on the campus of St. Francis University. Arrangements are by Gibbons Funeral Home, 301 Church St., Gallitzin.
