In the early 1900's Fred was a Forest Ranger in the Pecos National Forest (now Santa Fe National Forest), New Mexico. He and his family lived in a remote mountain valley northwest of Las Vegas, New Mexico called Cebolla Canyon. Fred worked on the family grist mill and farm. In 1922, his brother-in-law Harry Viles sold him the Cleveland, New Mexico electric plant, which was a water wheel that generated electricity.
Fred and Emma also worked at Mountain View Ranch at Cowles, New Mexico. The dude ranch was owned by his brother-in-law George A. "Skipper" Viles. Fred was an excellent fly fisherman and taught guests of the ranch to fish and horseback ride. In 1943, they moved to Corvallis, Oregon to live near their daughter Grace Dyer. Fred loved to work with wood and had the tools to make beautiful myrtlewood peices which he sold at local gift shops.
