When Marcos arrived in Vietnam he was assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 3rd Marine Division. Marcos died as a result of fragmentation wounds to the body from a hostile explosion device, when hostile forces attacked the night defensive perimeter of Alpha Company in the vicinity of La Chau (4) and Hill 22 and 4 kilometers south southeast of the Tuy Loan Bridge.
Sgt Hernandez served his country for 10 years.
