Esther B. "Essie" Thayer
Belle Thayer Esther B. Thayer passed away peacefully, after an extended illness, on September 17, 2008, in Claremont, where she has resided for the past 12 years. She was born in Michigan 91 years ago where she met and married her high school sweetheart, Bud Thayer. They moved with their two children to Pomona in 1949. She worked in a school cafeteria while her children were in school so she could be home afternoons. Later she began employment as a clerk typist with the Department of Social Services at the County of Los Angeles and advanced to the position of Supervisor before her retirement. Essie was always active in her church and in the community. She volunteered at the Claremont Police Department for approximately 20 years. At the same time she also volunteered in the Security Department of th e Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. She and her family were charter members of the Philadelphia Street Community Methodist Church where she served in many capacities, including Deacon, over the years. Most recently she attended the Church of Christ of Ontario. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Patricia Bernard, three granddaughters, Lisa K. Cox of Litchfield, IL; Shelli K. Boshart of Arrowbear Lake, CA; and Stephanie K. Bernard of Perrysburg, Ohio. She is also survived by 5 great grandchildr en and 1 great, great granddaughter. She is predeceased by her husband, her son Douglas A., and her brothers William, Elton and Charles. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 19, 2008, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Todd Memorial Chapel, 570 N. Garey Ave., Pomona. The family will attend a private interment and a memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to your favorite charity.
