Músá Banání was born into a Jewish family in Baghdad. When he was 17 he left home for Iran. In Ishraq, Iran he became a Bahá'í. He was photographed with a group of Bahá'ís in 1911 and the Iranian authorities used this photograph to round up Bahá'ís and arrest them.
Músá Banání was an entrepreneur but lost his money after World War I. He moved to Tehran in 1920 where he rebuilt his fortune. He traveled to the Holy Land on a 26 day pilgrimage in 1934 where he visited with the Beloved Shoghi Effendi.
In 1950 he responded to a call by Shoghi Effendi for pioneers to Africa and in 1951 moved to Kampala, Uganda. He was named a Hand of the Cause on Feb. 29, 1952.
In August 1960 Músá Banání suffered a stroke which caused him to be paralyzed and eventually to have hi leg amputated.
Músá Banání passed away on September 4, 1971 and was buried "in his favorite spot in the soil of Africa, within the shadow of the Mother Temple"
