George Lowe was born in 1845, in Scotland, the son of John and Margaret (Fowlie) Lowe. He married Agnes Duncan on May 27, 1868, in Tarves, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Together they immigrated to the United States in 1869 and settled on a farm in Cedar County. They were the parents of a son, William Duncan Lowe.

Agnes Duncan had a daughter, Mary Duncan, born out of wedlock while living in Scotland and came to America with her mother and step-father, George Lowe. She then took the Lowe name as her surname. She later moved to Atlantic, Iowa, to live with her mother. Following the death of George Lowe in 1872, Agnes married Robert Thomas Anderson. They had two sons, Frank and George Anderson. Agnes and Robert Anderson and Mary Lowe and half brother, William Lowe, are all buried in the Atlantic Cemetery.
