She was born March 4, 1922, in Mulberry, Kansas, the daughter of Lon H. Palmer and Mamie Belle Cox Palmer.
Helen was a 1939 graduate of Arcadia High School and also graduated from Fort Scott Junior College.
She married Cecil Paul Shankles on October 27, 1945, in Fort Scott. He preceded her in death on July 21, 1990. She was retired from the claims department of the Western Insurance Company. Helen served in the Navy WAVES during WWII. She was a member of the First Christian Church and the Thompson Harkey Post #25 American Legion.
Survivors include a son, Larry E. Shankles, Topeka, Kansas; two sisters, Dorothea Smokewood, Independence, Missouri, and Irma Lee Stumfoll, Fort Scott. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Margie Simpson and Madeline Mayfield; and a foster brother, John Day.
Rev. Reed Hartford will conduct funeral services at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at the First Christian Church. Burial will follow in Clarksburg Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Olson Frary Burkhart Post #1165 V.F.W. The family will receive friends from 7 P.M. to 8 P.M. Tuesday at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Memorials are suggested to either the American Diabetes Foundation or the First Christian Church and may be sent to Cheney Witt Chapel, P.O. Box 347, Fort Scott, Kansas 66701.
