Lemuel was the first child of Katherine Cole and Lt. Aaron Gaylord. His siblings were Phoebe (Phebe) and Lorena.
After his father was killed in the Battle of Wyoming (PA), his mother and sisters returned to Connecticut, after a grueling trip, sharing 2 horses.
He married Sylvia Murray about 1771. She was a schoolteacher, teaching the local children in her home for free. She had the first school in town, in 1802.
Lemuel and Sylvia had 9 children: Aaron, Laura, Orange, Horace, Jervis, Lucy, Noah Murray, Sylvia and Neviah (lived 3 1/2 years).

After war returned to Wyoming, PA., where he married then removed to Bradford Co., in 1816 removed to Ohio and later removed to IL. Tioga district in or before 1795 located near the state line in Wells twp., 1800. Sold part of his land, 1813 to Aaron Gaylord and the balance, 1814 to Solomon L. Smith. Served in Ordinance Department, voted 1840 election Evans twp. Lemuel listed with Lucy 1850 census. Was a Drummer boy in G. Washington Virginia Militia and as an Ensign in Col. Roger Eno's Company, CT."
