Services for Ambros "Hoss" Harvey, 88, of Wilson, were held at 4 p.m., Monday, February 2, at the Alexander Funeral Home Chapel, Wilson, with Elder Kirk McClendon and Elder Hilton Crane officiating.
Mr. Harvey was born February 8, 1915, at Broken Bow, the son of Lester L. and Etha Bradley Harvey. He died January 29, 2004, in Ardmore.
A longtime Wilson businessman and resident, Mr. Harvey was raised at Post Oak and attended school at both Post Oak and Orr, graduating from Orr High School in 1933. He and Exie Lorene Smith were married September 17, 1936, in Pauls Valley. She preceded him in death December 15, 1998. Mr. Harvey entered the U.S. Army on April 2, 1942, during World War II. He served as a medic in Cairo, Egypt and North Africa for 44 months before returning to Wilson. Mr. Harvey had a long career as owner of a grocery business. He first went into business with his brother-in-law, Reese Smith, but went out on his own in 1950 opening Harvey's Grocery, which for 17 years was located north of the present Wilson Schools. Mr. Harvey then built a new grocery on the highway south of Wilson which he and Exie owned and operated until 1998. In addition to the grocery business, Mr. Harvey also raised cattle and ranched. He has attended the Primitive Baptist Church for 59 years, and is a lifetime member of the American Legion Post No. 231, of which he had been a member for 60 years. Mr. Harvey was also a member of the Hewitt Masonic Lodge No. 89, appointed a Master Mason on November 30, 1950, and was presented his 50 Year Award by The Grand Lodge of Oklahoma Ancient, Free & Accepted Masons, Guthrie.
Survivors include three sisters, Vannie Scott of Bueno Park, California, Lorene Belcher of Grants Pass, Oregon and Marie Hughes of Shawnee; two brothers, "Doc" Leonard Harvey of West Covina, California and Rowe Harvey of Hemit, California; and a number of other family and friends.
Mr. Harvey was also preceded in death by his parents; his only child, a daughter in 1938; two sisters, Carrie Easterwood and Odessa Kirkland; and a brother, Floyd Harvey.
Pallbearers were David Hull, Danny Hull, Wayne Easterwood, Bill Harvey, Glennis Harvey, Garth Smith, Craig Smith and Dierk Smith. Honorary pallbearers were Steve Shores, Curtis Shores, Ivron McClendon, Grady Worsham, Lynn Henderson and Dale Gaither.
Interment was in Hewitt Cemetery, Wilson, with military grave-side rites conducted by the Chickasaw Nation Honor Guard of Ada. Services were under the direction of Alexander Funeral Home, Wilson.
