James Tatman 1802 - 1890

James Tatman, son of Nehemiah and Nancy Vincent Tatman was born on April 19, 1802 in Fleming County, Kentucky and died at age 88 on Monday evening, January 29, 1890 in the home of his son at 1024 Vermont Street in Quincy, Adams County, Illinois. He was buried in the Denson Cemetery at Ursa, Adams County, Illinois. He and Sarah Arterburn were married on July 14, 1825 in Jefferson County, Kentucky, she died earlier on January 19, 1887 in Quincy, Adams County, Illinois. They share the same grave marker in the Denson Cemetery.

James and Sarah Arterburn Tatman's marriage record is found in "Jefferson County, Virginia/Kentucky, Early Marriages, Book 1, 1781 - July 1826, page 186. #166

James and Sarah Arterburn Tatman were also enumerated on the 1860 Census of the Ursa Township Area of Adams County, Illinois and only Margaret M. at age 18 is enumerated with them, Francis M., who would have been age 16 at the time of this census, perhaps was working elsewhere as a farm laborer, or he may simply have died sometime prior to 1860...mrbrtsn

Source: Thomas Edson Brown has the grave site - July 2004. "Our father, James Tatman, born, Apr 19, 1802, died, Jan. 27, 1890." There is more writing but most unreadable. his wife, Sarah is on the clock-wise side of the stone.

Obituary - "Quincy (Illinois) Journal", 28 Jan 1890:

"James Tatman died this morning at his late residence, 1024 Vermont street. His ailment was bronchitis and he was only confined to his bed five days. He was 72 years of age. Deceased was an old resident of Quincy and was highly resspected by his large circle of acquaintances. He was born in Kentucky but came to Illinois several years ago. He first settled in Ursa, afterward taking up his home in this city. His wife died about a year ago. His remains are being prepared for shipment and will be sent to Ursa, his former home, tomorrow morning. The funeral will occur in the afternoon".

Obituary - "Quincy (Illinois) Weekly Whig", 30 Jan. 1890:

"DEATH OF JAMES TATMAN."

"James Tatman, who resided with his son at 1024 Vermont street, died during Monday night. Deceased was born in 1802 and was, therefore 88 years of age when he died. He had resided in this county for many years. His remains will be taken to Ursa for burial".

From "Pioneers Of The Prairie", by Wilma Brunenn, page 754:

"Tatman, James - born 1818, in Kentucky, died January 28, 1889. His wife, Sarah, b. ca 1815, died January 19, 1887, of cancer. They are buried near Ursa". (Only her death date is correct).

Note: Actually they were both buried in the Denson Cemetery at Ursa.
