Civil War veteran; he enlisted for the Union as a Private in Company E, 19th Indiana Infantry "Iron Brigade." His brother Matthew Hughes also joined the Union army. On July 1, 1863, he was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg and had to have his right arm amputated on July 3. He was discharged on September 18, 1863.

Just a year later, in August 1864, he was murdered in Muncie, Indiana. He had been drinking with the hired girls at the Davis House when got into an altercation with their employer, Joseph M. Davis. Mr. Davis's son grabbed a revolver and shot him at point-blank range. The shooter immediately fled and left town; Hughes was carried home to die. He was buried beside his mother, Rachel.
