Born in Salins-les-Bains, Jura, Franche-Comte, France, the son of Jean Pierre Bourbon and Justine Clement. His parents came from a long line of grape growers, and Bourbons lived at Salins at least as far back as the late 1600s. The family immigrated to Missouri in 1855 and homesteaded land west of Richwoods, Washington County, MO. Their nearest neighbors were the family of Francois Sansoucie, and Marie Catherine Delcour. In 1863, Francois married their daughter, Marie Margarett Francoise Sansoucie. They had 12 children, 4 female, 8 male. He served in Union forces in the Civil War, as Corporal, Co. I, 26th Regt, Missouri Infantry. He was disabled and discharged during the Union siege of Corinth, Mississippi. Later, he enlisted as Private, Co. L, 6th Regt, Missouri Cavalry. That unit saw action until the end of the war and Francois was mustered out of service at New Orleans, LA. About 1876 to 1880, his father moved the family to land near Luebbering, in Franklin County, MO. His father and his younger brother, Polete, remained there, but Francois moved his family back to Washington County by 1894, then to Blackwell by 1906. His Civil War pension papers reveal that, for all of his life after the war, Francois became increasingly disabled. By the time he died, he was nearly totally physically incapacitated. Family lore, and his Civil War Papers, suggest that he was buried in an unmarked grave in Blackwell / Pinson Cemetery, in St Francois County, MO.
