James McCutchan was the son of Capt. Samuel McCutchan/en/eon and Rebecca Downey. In Scotland, the surname was spelled McCutcheon and like many other Scots, who immigrated here, slightly altered it.

He married 3 times: first to Susannah Bollar, 31 Aug 1803 in Augusta Co. (had a daughter Maria in 1805); second to Elizabeth Kirkpatrick, on 2 Jul 1811 in Augusta Co. by Çhesly Kinney (had sons Thomas and John in 1819 and 1821) and third and last to Margaret McClung, on 18 Aug 1825 in Rockbridge Co., Virginia (no known children).

His first wife Susannah, is buried at the Glebe, his second wife Elizabeth is buried "2 plots away from" him ("her name is on his tombstone because her descendants had this done after his death" per SL) and his third and last wife is also buried here (with "eon" in her surname).

On the 1850 District 53, Rockbridge Co., Virginia census, I found farmer JAMES McCutchan, 74 and his McCutchan family: farmer Albert A., 33; Margaret R., 27; Mary E., 8; Rachel A., 6; Phebe C., 5; James R., 8/12 plus (no occupation listed) Nancy McClung, 40, all Virginia born. James was not on the list of slave owners.

In 1884 onward, there are several Augusta Co. Chancery proceedings involving his families that are posted in the Staunton Spectator. Jas Y McCutchan and Peggy McCutchan and many others are involved. See photo of one from the 8 Apr 1885 Staunton Spectator issue on this site. A look at the long court case may reveal for family connections. Elizabeth Craig McCutchan died 23 Mar 1884 with a will and had considerable land that was ultimately divided between her kin. She was Mrs. Charles C. McCutchan, who was the brother of this James and son of Samuel McCutchan and Rebecca Downey. Peggy is Margaret Finley "Peggy" McCutchan, 1804-1896 (30011111).

An earlier one giving several family connections was in the 2 Sep 1884 issue of the Staunton Spectator. My transcription: VIRGINIA - IN VACATION - In the Clerk's office, Circuit Court of Augusta county, September 1st, 1884:- James H. Callison, Executor of Elizabeth McCutchen, dec'd, Plaintiff vs. Peggy McCutchen, James Y. McCutchen, H. Bell and Hannah H. his wife, Sarah E. Harris, Maggie Harris, Minnie Harris, J. Buck McCutchen, S. Frank McCutchen, David East and Maggie, his wife, Estaline Thompso, Susan F. McCutchen, J.B. McCutchen, C.W. Baylor and Mary E., his wife, Anna McCutchen, Eldred Strain, James Strain, S. P. Strain, Sue Bratton, ___ Hull and ___, his wife, ___ Edmondson and ___, his wife, Rice B. McCutchen, T. M. McCutchen, Grace McCutchen, ___ Wheat, and Rachael, his wife, Preston Brown and Lina, his wife, William McCutchen, Alice McCutchen, J. C. McCutchen, Temperance Matheny, Cyrus A. McCutchen, the children of Amanda Edmondson, wholes names and residences are unknown, Margaret McCutchen, Wm. Buchanan, J. S. Buchanan, Bolivar Butchanan, Robert Buchanan, James McCutchen, Rachael McCutchen, Joseph Kunkle and Fannie, his wife, James Robert McCutchen, Philander McCutchen, the children of Elvira T. Dixon, wife of Thomas Dixon, wholes names and residences are unknown, Rebecca Logan, Isaac McCutchen, Daniel McCutchen, James B. McCutchen, Trustee for the Shemariah Congregation, -- (article ends).

James McCutcheon's home was surveyed by James Willson McClung on 3 Aug 1936 for the WPA, #ROC360. It was built before James was born, in 1746 and was built and used by the Timber Ridge Presbyterian congregation. It was located about 11 miles north of Rockbridge Co and 3 miles north of the current Timber Ridge church. Ten years later after the 2nd church was built, Robert Davis purchased it and remodeled it into a family home. It was rectangular with a cellar, 1 1/2 stories high, log construction, chimneys at either end, had 3 dormers in the attic, James purchased it from Wm Lyle on 31 Aug 1822, Rockbridge Co. Deed Book N, p 367. Following James' death, it was inherited by son Albert, 2 Aug 1852, Will Book 12, p 303. It stayed in the McCutchan/eon family for some time, including the Crist family (Ann Eliza. McCutheon married Moffett H Crist) who owned it in 1936. The logs were clapboarded at unknown date. The survey includes a black and white 1936 photo showing a roof dormer and it wasn't painted blue like the later undated photo on the side.

Cousin Steven Lucas shared a photo of the old Timber Ridge Communion Table dated 1756 that this family used and is still in use today at the church. Steven's aunt, the late Virginia Kibler shared a photo of the old James McCutchan home located near the church. His house was torn down at unknown date.
