Bertha was born in Alberta township, Benton county, Minnesota two years after her parents started farming there. Her parents and five siblings had immigrated in 1869 from Danzig, Germany. In 1886 her mother and a sister were killed in a tornado near Rice, MN while attending a wedding. Her father was left with 12 children, five were under the age of 10. The youngest children went to live with other relatives as her father healed from his injuries. In 1900 she was was age 21 working for a family in Pueblo, Colo. Bertha had a child in 1904 with her first husband, Charles "Leo" Howard. Bertha married Andrew Worm on March 22, 1911. This was a second marriage for both of them. Andrew had five children, Bertha had one. Together they added two more children to their family.
