Surviving are his wife, Nina; two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Oswald, Chicago, Miss Majorie Shannon, Orlando, FL, son Robert Leroy of Tampa, FL; four brothers, Preston F., Raleigh, Harry, and Alton, Fort Wayne; a sister, Mrs. Florence Johnson, Fort Wayne; and seven grandchildren.

___________________
He was a self made successful wholesale candy/snack/cigar sales distributor in a day when small gas stations & grocers in surrounding towns didn't have those items. Was a clerk for the railroad before the Depression and created this job for himself.

He told how a best friend was his bank's president and he went in with his last paycheck and asked him if he should deposit it or not. The man assured him the bank was solid. As he left the bank after depositing his check he heard a commotion and the bank president had jumped out of his window to his death...he knew the bank was going under.
He could never understand how he could lie to him, knowing what he was going to do. However, he was the only one they knew who's house was paid for so they were in a better situation.

He taught his whole extended family, how to save money in so many tiny ways "pennies make dollars" he said, not waste money any things you don't need and pay important things like the house ahead of time and never pay rent or interest on anything. His solid values and example have been followed by his great grandchildren who now have houses of their own.

He had so many friends and clients that there were over 100 floral arrangements lined up on both sides of the casket on 4 steps along the long side of the double room at his funeral. Everyone loved his Irish grin and humorous stories of everyday events and jokes. A typical Irish storyteller. He would cut out little cute ones and put into a book.

He thought ridiculous what people spent on smokes & put the same amount they spent in a jug each day for the bank.

A favorite poem he gave mother:
ONE LITTLE ROSE
I would rather have one little rose,
From the garden of a friend,
Than to have the choicest flowers,
When my stay on earth must end.

Rather, I would have the kindest word,
and a smile that I can see,
Than flattery when my heart is stilled,
And this life has ceased to be.

Bring me all the flowers today,
Whether white or pink or red,
I'd rather have one blossom now,
Than a truckload when I'm dead.
