On August 1, 1777, Joel, at the age of 18 years, enlisted for six months as a Private in Captain Ralph Earll's Company, Colonel Danforth Keyes's Massaschusetts Regiment. Joel marched with his Company to Providence, Rhode Island where he remained until discharged on January 3, 1778 after serving 4 months and 28 days.
About six months later, On July 10, 1778, Joel, enlisted for another 6 months service as a Private in Captain William Tucker's Company, Colonel Jacob Gerrish's Massachusetts Regiment. During this enlistment, Joel served at Rutland, Worcester County, Massachusetts guarding British prisoners who were taken at the Battle of Saratoga, October 1777. He was discharged from this enlistment on January 1, 1779 after serving 5 months and 23 days.
Joel married, November 28, 1782, at Leicester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, Persis Witt (1763-1817) by whom he had 11 children (7 sons and 4 daughters): Willard (b. 1783), Alpheus (1785-1849), Polly (b. 1788), Calvin (b. 1790), Eli (b. 1792), Persis (b. 1793), Silas (b. 1798), Tyler (b. 1800), Sophia and Sumner (twins) (b. 1802), and a daughter (b. 1804). The 1st three children were born at Leicester. The remaining children were born after moving to Hubbardston, Worcester County, Massachusetts. A little over two years after the death of his 1st wife, Joel married, March 29, 1819, at Hubbardston, Mrs. Phebe Spring. He moved from Hubbardston, Massachsuetts to Mount Holly, Rutland County, Vermont the same year, 1819.
