Mrs. Naomi Tillman Downey - born in 1917 in Theodore, Alabama, and a longtime resident of Bayou La Batre, Alabama died on December 17, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband, C.L. Downey and a son, Gene Downey. She is survived by three sons: Stephen Downey (Myrtle), James T. Downey (Vicki), Terry Downey (Debi) all of Bayou La Batre, Alabama; three daughters: Ruth D. Askew (John) of Lake Charles, Louisiana, Joyce D. Zirlott (Charles) of Irvington, Emma Lou D. Edwards (Lyman) of Kansas City, Missouri; one brother, Porter Tillman (Mary); 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, extended family and friends. Baptized at the age of twelve into the Community of Christ Church, Mrs. Downey was a charter member of the Bayou La Batre Branch where she served as teacher, Book Steward, and on other commissions. Having taught in Mobile County Public Schools for thirty-seven years, she retired from Baker High School in 1984. She held degrees from the University of West Alabama and the University of South Alabama. In her retirement, Mrs. Downey maintained her membership in the NEA, AEA, MRTA, and Alabama Counseling Association. She was a longtime member of the Beta Tau Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary teacher's society. Locally, Mrs. Downey served on the Mose Hudson Tapia Library Board and was a charter member of the Bayou La Batre-Coden Historical Foundation. Visitation will be held at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home on Friday, December 19, 2008 from 5-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held from the funeral home chapel on Saturday, December 20, 2008 at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Oddfellows Cemetery.
