REVEL A. BATES DIES OF HEART ATTACK WED.

People of Alton were shocked Wednesday morning when the word spread over town that Revel Bates had died suddenly at his home of a heart attack about 7:15 a.m.

He had suffered a light attack the preceding week and had been confined to his home for a few days, but on Monday of this week, resumed his work as mail carrier on R.F.D 1, and seemed to be feeling considerably improved. He had eaten breakfast Wednesday morning, and was making preparations to come to the post office to put up his mail, when he was suddenly stricken. Dr. Carhart was called immediately to the home, but pronounced him dead upon his arrival.

Revel Alexander Bates, son of Joe and Anthom Bates, was born at Alton, MO., January 27, 1894, and departed this life April 20, 1949, at his home in Alton, making his age at time of death 54 years, 10 months and 7 days.

He was united in marriage to Miss Lucy Boze January 1, 1922, and to this union one son was born, Estus L. Bates of Alton.

He was converted early in life and united with the Alton Baptist Church, where he has remained a loyal member and active church worker. He has been secretary of the Sunday School in that church for the past fifteen years, and for the past several years has also served as a deacon.

Revel was a veteran of World War I, having spent eleven months in the service of his country during that time. After his return from service, he accepted the position of U.S. Mail carrier on Rural Route No. 1 out of Alton, beginning in September of 1919, which position he has held since that time. He would have completed thirty years of service in September of this year. Prior to entering the Army, he taught two terms of school at Bardley, Mo., beginning in 1916.

Surviving are his wife and one son, Estus of Alton; two sisters, Mrs. Minerva Palmer of Alton, and Mrs. John Bryant of Pine Bluff, Ark; two brothers, Lucas and Perry Bates, both of Bardley, Mo.

Having been a resident of Alton practically all of his life, Revel was widely known, and he was held in highest esteem by his wide circle of friends, who were numbered by his acquaintances. He will be sadly missed, not only by his family, but by his fellow church workers, the patrons on his mail route whom he has served faithfully through the years, and by all who knew him.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Alton Baptist Church Friday afternoon, April 22 at 2:00 o'clock, with the Rev. Harry Hunt of Pocahontas, Ark., who is a former pastor officiating. Music will be furnished by a mixed quartet composed of Mrs. Dorothy Lee Cotton, Mrs. Georgia Malony, Truman Raley and Newman Whitten, with Mrs. Ben Gum as pianist.

Pallbearers will be Frank Young, Wilburn Cox, Hardin Franks, Elgan Custer, Neal Key, and Doris Johnson.

Interment will be in Smith Cemetery, under direction of the Carter Funeral Home of Thayer.
