Gertrude J. Baldwin Wyche (1873-1948) joined the American Colony in Jerusalem with her father and three of her siblings in 1891. Her father, Edward F. Baldwin, had been a Philadelphia lawyer who with his cousin, Dr. A.B. Kirkpatrick, opened America's first medical mission. This led Baldwin and his family to open a medical mission in Morocco. After Morocco, he went on to Lebanon (still part of Syria at the time), and later to the American Colony, Jerusalem.

Educated in America and England, Gertrude Baldwin was a school teacher in the Colony school. After leaving the Colony, she went on to teach languages at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. She also wrote poetry, and her poetry was published in book form, as well as in journals, greeting cards, and song.
