DANIEL MORGAN STOCKTON was born 5 Jul 1793 in Virginia, and died 28 Dec 1855 in Greenfield, Dade, Missouri. He was the son of Clayton Stockton & Nancy Patton. He married Sarah Goodnight McGowan on 2 March 1815, in Wayne, Kentucky. Sarah was born 23 April 1793 in Virginia, and died after July 11, 1860 and before 1870 in Greenfield, Dade, Missouri.

Daniel and his wife, Sarah, came to Greene County, Missouri, in 1833 and settled near the town of Bolivar. Daniel helped to organize Polk County, Missouri in 1834. The first meeting of the county court was held on February 9, 1835, at the house of Daniel M. Stockton, five miles southwest of Bolivar, on the West Bend road. On the second day, the court divided the county into three Municipal Townships; the central portion was called Marion, the eastern part, Washington, and the western, Jackson. The first election for Judges was held in Marion Township, the second was in Jackson Township. James Stockton, Daniel's brother, was elected as one of the judges. Daniel & Sarah lived in that portion of Polk County that later became Dade County. In about 1838, Daniel traded his homestead rights and purchased 160 acres in Jackson Township.

Marion Township is the wealthiest of the three townships in Polk County. It is ten miles from east to west and eleven miles from north to south, 110 square miles in all. The northern portion of the township is timbered and hilly and Bolivar was the only town. Among the first settlers of Marion Township were Daniel M. Stockton and his brother, David D. Stockton who was a sheriff in Polk Co. in 1844 for 2 years. Population in 1870, including the town of Bolivar was 2,489.

Daniel and Sarah remained in Dade County, Missouri, until their death and are buried in the Stockton Family Cemetery near Greenfield. Several generations of grandchildren of Daniel & Sarah live in or near Dade County today.
