Jordan Grant was born on June 12, 1812, in Rhea County, Tennessee to Sarah "Sally" Wyatt, age 32, and Richard Grant, age 26. Tax lists as early as 1828 show Richard Grant living in St. Francis County, Arkansas. "Jourdin Grant" is listed in that same county on tax lists as early as 1834. He was taxed on 1 horse and being a white male over 21. The last tax list in this county that they were listed on was in 1838. By 1839, the family had moved to Polk County, Missouri. Government Land Entries show Richard Grant as owning Township 33, Range 24 in Polk County.

While living in Polk County, Missouri, Jordan met and married young 22-year-old Mary Parthena Stockton who was called, "Mary Polly". They were married in Dade County, Missouri on January 22, 1840. Apparently, Jordan had been married previously while living in Arkansas as 12-year-old Elizabeth Grant who was born in Arkansas is listed as the first of his children on the 1850 Dade County, Missouri, US Census. Jordan and Mary Polly had eight children together, all born in Missouri.

Jordan died on May 25, 1868, in Everton, Missouri. A kick from a horse with fatal results took the life of Jordan Grant at the age of 55 years, less than a month before his 56th birthday.

Jordan Grant is listed on the Stockton Cemetery records as William Jordan Grant, however, an obelisk tombstone bears his name as "Jorden Grant." This stone is shared with his wife, Mary P. Grant. It seems unlikely that his first name was William as all documents with his name simply state Jordan. Also, he had a brother named William.

Family legend tells that Jordan Grant was a first cousin to former General Ulysses S. Grant who later became the President of the United States from March 4, 1869 – March 4, 1877. Ulysses S. Grant became President after the death of Jordan. Proof of his relation to Ulysses Grant from family tree information has not been found by me. I would love to know the connection of Jordan in my family tree to Ulysses Grant. Jordan is my 2nd Great Grandfather.

The document on this page has the original signature of Jordan Grant where he signed this legal document as surety for a William M. Brewer of Cedar County, Missouri, for not enrolling with the Union Army. This paper is in the Union Citizen's File of the Provost Marshall of the State of Missouri. The document is dated November 13, 1862.
