Judith L. Gatewood Cottingham was the eighth of twelve children born to Philip Gatewood (1794-ca. 1848) and his wife Jane Bailey (ca. 1795-1880) of Anson Co., NC. Her father worked a farm near Morven. In 1839 he abandoned his family in the wake of a scandalous murder.

On January 27, 1859, Judith married James Bridges Cottingham in Anson Co. The couple worked a small farm near Morven, Anson Co., and had seven children: Adella (b. 1859), Anne Jane (b. 1861), James L. (b. 1862), Ida R. (b. 1866), Terressa G. (b. 1867), Sarah A. (b. 1869), and Lora (b. ca. 1871). Judith died at her home. The cause of death was given as uremic poisoning, probably the result of kidney failure.

Morven, Dec. 13.—Mrs. J.B. Cottingham died at her home in the Sneedsboro neighborhood Monday morning after a long illness. Mrs. Cottingham was eighty-eight years of age and a noble Christian and the oldest member of the Morven Baptist church. The funeral was conducted from the residence and the burial was in the Morven cemetery, Tuesday afternoon at half after three o'clock.
