Lonnie C. Hughes, 55, of Sparta was one of two persons killed at 4:45 p.m. Monday in Cooper County.

Also killed in the crash was Mrs. Viola May Adams, 47, mother of Mrs. Harold Melton of Ozark.

Troopers said the accident occurred when James Arley Hughes, 26, of St. Joseph, a nephew of Lonnie Hughes slid through an intersection hit an embankment with his car. Young Hughes suffered lacerations of the face and arms.

Troopers said he apparently approached the intersection of Routes AA and B in Cooper County at too high a rate of speed and was unable to stop his car. After striking the dirt bank, the vehicle caromed into a field, nearly demolished
