Graveside services for Florette Milam Newman, 88 of Carthage, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at Reeves McMillan Cemetery with Joe Freeman officiating. Services are under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Mrs. Newman died March 30, 2009 in Carthage.

Mrs. Florette Milam Newman was born March 17, 1921 in Panola County, to the marriage of Robert Jackson and Viola Bounds Milam. She married Mr. James Basil Newman on July 13, 1933 and celebrated 57 years together until he preceded her in death October 22, 1991. Florette was a wonderful housewife and homemaker where she loved gardening, crocheting, sewing and quilting. She also enjoyed traveling and was a lover of flowers and attended the Logan Assembly of God Church. Mrs. Newman is preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers, Thurman, Paul, Billy Ray and R.J. Milam; sister, Lillian Warren; son, Billy Eugene Newman; grandchildren, Donald Scott Newman and Richard Brian Newman.

Survivors include son Samuel Jackson Newman and wife Nancy, of Midyett, Texas; daughters Nancy Burnes and husband Thomas, of Logan, and Doris Haines and husband Roland, of Logan; bother Earl Wayne Milam, of Dallas; sister Elaine Helton and husband Rev. Forrest Helton, of Carthage; grandchildren Darlene Barber, Joel Newman, Anita Shahan, Allison Burnes, Arlene Allen and Thomas Adam Burnes; great-grandchildren Kaylie Burnes, Samantha Wright, Shannon Barber, Blade Jacobs, Jon Eric Hough, Matthew Newman, Daniel Newman and Benjamin Newman; great-great-grandchildren Taylor and Brandon Wright; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of cousins and friends.

Pallbearers will be Henry Shahan, Blade Jacobs, Jonerite Hough, Thomas Burnes and Jerry Allen.
