Born In Gwa Graweiler, Canton rockhausen, Rhine, Barvaria, Germany, son of Heinrich And Phillippena Spies. Came to U.S. when 14 years old to avoid complusory military training. Civil War Veteran: Enlisted in the US Army as member of 3rd Ill. Cav. at the age of 20 years. Was taken prisoner and held at Libby Prison; Later exchanged and discharged. He learned to read the english language from reading the Greenville Advocate. Married Margaret Reinhardt on 4-10-1866 in Shoal Creek Township.
