Daughter of Samuel and Agnes Noble Hargraves. Married Thomas Weir Sept. 21 1861 in Utah.
Jane was born at Carlisle, Cumberland, England to Samuel Hargraves and Agnes Noble Hargraves.
Samuel and Agnes were baptized members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints 1 Apr 1842 by Elder John Barker in Carlisle. Jane and Mary were born in England. The family moved to Scotland. They lived there for seven years where her father was Branch President of the Lanark Branch in Scotland. Janett, John, and Charles, were born to them in Scotland.
The family moved back to Carlisle 7 Oct 1849. Three more children were born in England, Samuel, Elizabeth and Margaret. Charles and Samuel died while there. The Hargraves are listed on the 1851 Census for England. Jane is listed as 10. Jane was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints 21 Mar 1853 while in England.
In Mar 1856 Jane with her parents and five surviving sibblings went to Liverpool, England, where they boarded the Ship "Enoch Train" to sail to America. The Hargraves family are listed as passengers. (FHL film #0025691) Jane listed as age 16. Address 3 Derby St. Newcastle on Tyme, England. Before sailing to America the family lived in a house owned by Mary Ann Sutherland, whose son Alec was Jane's sweetheart. The sailing record states that Samuel made a deposit of 10 pounds, Agnes 8 pounds and Jane 2 pounds.
Three days aboard ship Agnes gave birth to a baby boy. They named him "Enoch Trane" after the ship.
They reached Boston 1 May 1856, and the next day left by train for New York City then on to Iowa City, Iowa where the railroad ended. They travelled in boxcars with no place to sit except on their trunks. Iowa City is where they joined the Daniel D. McArthur Handcart Company going to Salt Lake City. They arrived at Florence Nebraska 8 Jul 1856, and remained there about two weeks recuperating their strength and repairing handcarts. The story is told that Jane and Mary were pulling one of the carts, and as they reached the top of a steep hill, they thought it was their chance to be rid of the cart so they let it roll back down the hill thinking it would be broken to pieces and they would not have to pull it farther, but to their astonishment it was damaged very little and they had the opportunity of going down and bringing it up the hill again, and pulling it on to Salt Lake. They reached Salt Lake City 26 Sep 1856.
The family lived in Salt Lake City for three years. In 1858 Samuel was called to help defend the Saints against the Johnston Army, the people were told to move south. Bishop Hess took Agnes and the children in his wagon, and as night came on they were moved into an abandoned log cabin. That night Agnes gave birth to a son. Their tenth child, Thomas. They next moved to Farmington where Alexander was born.
Samuel was called to serve a Mission in England for two years. When he returned they moved to Providence, Cache, Utah wher the last two children wer born, Samuel and Agnes. It was about this time 21 Sep 1861 that Jane married John Thomas Weir in Salt Lake City.
Jane died 18 Oct 1877.
