Major League Baseball Player. From 1927 to 1945, he was a right-handed pitcher for the Washington Senators, St. Louis Browns, New York Giants, Boston Braves and Philadelphia Phillies. He played in relief roles with the New York Giants during their 1936 and 1937 World Series appearances where the Giants lost both series to the New York Yankees. In 1936, he led the National League with 24 games finished. In 1938, he led the National League with 51 appearances, 12 saves, and 35 games finished. in his 15-year career, he posted a 72–95 record with a 4.65 ERA, 372 strikeouts, and 38 saves in 472 appearances including 132 as a starter.
