By the death of SAMUEL DARBEE the
town of Rockland, and, indeed, the
county of Sullivan, loses one of its
oldest and most respected citizens. He
died at his residence in Westfield Flats,
Sunday, October 28th. aged 75 years.
He was born on the farm adjoining
that on which he had his residence at
the time of his death. His father was
one of the first settlers of the town
having moved there from Little Britain,
Orange County in 1796, before Samuel
was born. Some idea of the condition
of the town at the time Samuel Darbee,
the elder, moved into it may be gathered
from the fact that fourteen years later,
in 1810, there were but 309 inhabitants.
Probably the first attempt in the direction
of manufacturing was that of this pioneer.
A few years after taking up his residence
he started a fulling and dyeing
establishment near the junction of the
Beaverkill and Willowemoc streams
which he kept in operation until 1826.
The subject of this sketch was, like
his father, an active, enterprising and
very industrious man. He was thoroughly
identified with the business and social
interests of his native town, and commanded
the confidence and had the esteem of all
among whom his loop; and useful life was
passed. In politics he was always a firm
democrat, and was, we believe, a continuous
subscriber to the Watchman from its
establishment, over fifty years
ago, to the time of his death.
