Thomas Hardy was murdered during the northernmost raid of the Civil War, by James Jackson who was a bushwhacker from Missouri. Thomas Hardy was an outspoken opponent of slavery. He and two Union soldiers who were home on leave were shot down by James Jackson who was leading a group of 12 confederate raiders who were wearing federal uniforms.
