Funeral for Helen Singletary, longtime resident of McMinnville, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Macy & Son Funeral Directors, McMinnville. The Rev. Jim Peterson will officiate.

Private interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park, McMinnville.

She died in her home Dec. 2, 2003, at the age of 84.

She was born March 25, 1919, in Portland, the daughter of Albert E. and Grace Braden Bates. She lived and attended schools in Portland until 1932, when she moved to McMinnville with her family. She graduated from McMinnville High School in 1937, then attended Linfield College. She went on to the University of Oregon Medical School and graduated in 1942 with an O.B. nursing degree.

She and Robert Singletary were married Sept. 6, 1941, in McMinnville. She worked for Dr. Barendrich as an office and scrub nurse for a short time, then took time off to raise her family.

From 1956 to 1958, she worked in Michaels' Rest Home, then joined McMinnville Community Hospital. She had served as director of nursing before retiring from the hospital as emergency room coordinator in 1984 after 25 years.

Mrs. Singletary was a charter member of Suzy Circle of the United Methodist Church, a long-time member of Junior Matrons, the PTA and the Fuchsia Club. She enjoyed gardening and swam three times a week. She also belonged to the Thursday Hiking Group and loved homemaking.

After she retired, she loved to travel and was a confirmed beachcomber. Her family said, "She was a lifelong care giver and took care of everyone and touched many lives.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2003.

Survivors include a son, James R. Singletary of Kent, Wash.; a daughter, Sharon Lease of Littleton, Colo.; a brother, John Bates of McMinnville; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Helen Bates Singletary Nursing Scholarship at Linfield College in care of Macy & Son, 135 N.E. Evans St., McMinnville, OR 97128.
