Opelika Tragedy.
Lee Allen Shot by S. H. Bailey – Slayer in Jail.

As a result of a shooting affray that occurred in Opelika last Wednesday afternoon about one o'clock, Mr. Lee Allen is dead and Mr. S. H. Bailey is in jail, charged with murder.

The trouble occurred on Tallapoosa Street in front of Sam Pinkey's store, and as there were few eye witnesses to the tragedy, is hard to get at the facts in the case. Immediately after the shooting Mr. Allen was carried to his room at the Mecca Hotel, ad physicians were summoned. The surgeons did all in their power to save the life of the wounded man, but despite their efforts, the end came at about 2 o'clock Thursday morning.

The remains, accompanied by relatives and friends of the deceased, were brought to LaFayette Thursday a.m. and the funeral services were conducted at the home of Mr. J. W. Henderson at 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon by Rev. W. A. Taliaferro, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Opelika, After the funeral the body was carried to the Gaines Sanitarium where an operation was performed to find the bullet thought to be lodged in his body. We did not learn the result of the operation.

The remains were laid to rest in the City Cemetery at 5:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon.

Mr. Allen resided in LaFayette for a number of years, and was well and favorably known here, and the news of his untimely death was a shock to his many friends.
