"Taken from The Messenger of Truth"
Hesston, Kansas, Mother and Sister Helena Holdeman, (Kime) died July 10, 1917, at the age of 87 years, 8 months and 28 days. Mother was born in Schuylkil Co., Penna., Oct. 12, 1829; when she was 6 months old her parents removed to Wayne Co., Ohio, where she was raised. May 23rd, 1847 she was joined in marriage to David S. Holdeman (who preceded her in death 12 years, 3 months and 5 days). To them were born 17 children (5 preceded her); 127 grandchildren (28 preceded); great grandchildren 257 (18 preceded); and 6 great great grandchildren (1 preceded). In 1851 our parents removed to Elkhart, Ind., and in 1873, they removed to McPherson Co., Kansas where they resided until they were called away to the better world. Mother became converted in 1860, and becoming a member of the church, remaining faithful unto death. For several years as she was gradually becoming more feeble, we frequently would ask how it was with her soul, her reply would be, "My faith and hope are, that I will stand at the right hand of God." This we always believed. She bore her declining age patiently, departing peacefully, leaving 3 brothers and 6 sisters; 8 sons and 4 daughters; 99 grandchildren, 233 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren to mourn her departure. The funeral was conducted in the Holdeman meetinghouse, and the sermon preached in English by brother John A. Koehn, Montezuma, and in German by brother Jacob Dirks, Halstead, Kansas, to a large congregation. Then the remains were interred in the cemetery aside the church. D.B. Holdeman.
