His wife was Catharina (Cook) Dalton. born abt. 1811/13 and died aft. 1891.

"Family tradition states that some time early in the 1800's, two Dalton brothers came from Ireland to Lot 7 in Prince Edward Island. The story tells that one of the brothers, who had no means with which to make a settlement, appealed to the priest of the Lot 7 Roman Catholic Church for assistance. There had been a failure of the wheat and potato crops in the area at the time and the Roman Catholic parish had helped so many impoverished settlers that the priest was unable to give Mr. Dalton any material assistance. It is also told that Mr. Dalton made another appeal, this time to a minister of the Bible Christian faith, and thereby received a small amount of money and promise of further assistance. A short time later Mr. Dalton was converted to Protestantism and became a lay preacher in the Bible Christian (Methodist) Church. He married and had four sons: Maurice, Michael, Joseph, William." [Taken from "Past and Present, A history of Brae, pg. 220] by Brae Heritage Group, 1979.

"The original spelling of the Dalton was D'Alton. The D'Altons lived long, long ago in Normandy, France." [Taken from "Past and Present, A history of Brae, pg. 222] by Brae Heritage Group, 1979.

It is believed he was born in Ireland and came to Prince Edward Island, Canada with his brother, Peter. His Brother's name might be Michael.

They probably came in the wave from Ireland about 1820 or slightly before, getting out when the British were taking over. It was easier for them to go to Canada, a British possession than it was to go to America. But then many of them emigrated from Canada to America. [from Millicent Craig, Dalton Genealogical Society].

In the 1841 Census, Jeremiah and Catharina lived in Lot 7. His occupation was shipscarpenter and he listed their religion as "other". There were 2 people born in Ireland and 6 people born in PEI, Canada, in the household. The census counted 3 boys and 3 girls under the age of 16 and one man aged 16 to 45. Catharina wasn't listed because "his wife has been afflicted about 15 months, appears to be recovering from this malady".

In the 1861 census, they were still living in Lot 7 and he was now listed a farmer. And now they were listed as B.Xn. (Bible Christian). The household consisted of one girl aged 16 to 21, one man aged 21 to 45, and a couple aged 45 to 60.

Jeremiah's death was listed in two newspapers. In the 13 Dec 1875 edition of the Examiner (pg. 3) - "At his residence, Lot 7, on November 7th, after an illness of seven weeks, Jer. Dalton, sen. in the 69th year of his age." Another newspaper confirms this information, plus continues his obituary at great length. (10 Dec 1875 edition of Weekly ? Patriot - pg. 3).
