Her 1856 birth record shows she was a foundling and was given the name "Nicola di Martino" by the authorities. She arrived with only a muslin cloth and nothing to identify her parents. She was baptized the same day she was found. Although the name of her birth father is unknown, other documentation indicates she was the daughter of Madeline Pecora (nee Granata) born about 1817 in Naso, Messina, Sicily. This means Nicola had 5 Pecora half brothers and 3 half sisters.

Nicola married first to 60yo Antonino Lofurno (widower of Maria Granata) on 18 Mar 1882 in Nicosia, Italy and had sons Francesco and Giovanni. It is unknown whether Nicola's mother was related to Antonino's first wife.

Antonino died in 1892 and Nicola married second to Frank LoGrasso 13 Apr 1895 and had daughter Carmela. She and Carmela immigrated to America in 1903. Frank LoGrasso had immigrated six years earlier. Her husband called her "Nicolina" and she apparently also went by "Cora" which could possibly have been her way of identifying with "Pecora".
