Corporal Winstead was a member of the United States Marine Corps from 1926 to 1930, and was awarded the USMC Good Conduct medal during his service.Homer joined the USMC on 15 November 1926 at South Bend, IN. His enlistment date started on November 29, 1926, where upon he was sent to Marine Base Parris Island, South Carolina, for training. After basic training he was sent to armorer school at Philadelphia. After school he was promoted to Corporal on May 1, 1928, when he was assigned as a storekeeper and armorer. On November 28, 1930 he was discharged at Philadelphia and awarded the Marine Corps Good Conduct medal No.88598. He was then placed in the USMC reserves where he served inactive status until November 28, 1934, when he was honorably discharged for his service to the corps.
