DIED, at his residence in Forsyth County, N.C., on Saturday morning, the 29th of December, 1855, with a cancer of the face, DOUGHTY STOCKTON, in the 80th year of his age. He left a companion whom he had so devotedly embraced for 58 years, and eight children, four daughters and four sons, the youngest being 36 years old, to mourn his loss.

In recording the death of the deceased, the friends cannot refrain from mingling with the record an expression of their high appreciation of his exalted virtues, and rare and extensive usefulness. While his long useful and laborious life for the last forty-seven years was devoted to serving the public as a Landlord, with the noblest impulses and with a sensibility alive to the tenderest wishes of the weary traveller, his influence was ever exerted to render them comfortable and happy. He always discharged his duties with a dignity and propriety of conduct, which conciliated the regard and secured for him the love and esteem of all who knew him. He was possessed of patience, meekness, self-denial and forbearance, which enabled him to have command over himself and to govern his own family with affection, dignity and prudence, at the same time checking every disposition injurious to society, and promoting that love and service, which christians of the same household owe to each other.

Thus surrounded by friends and admirers, possessed of the most commendable qualities of heart and mind, and happy in all the relations of life, he was universally beloved; but disease came, and after a protracted illness, death demanded his victim. Having accomplished his deeds on earth, and made his peace with God, he was ready to welcome the grim tyrant, death, and receive him as a kind messenger sent from the Supreme Ruler of heaven and earth, to translate him from this imperfect to that all-perfect, glorious and celestial place above, where the Supreme Ruler of the universe resides.
