Helen Louise Buskirk was born March 28, 1920 at home in Belpre, Washington County, Ohio, the first of five children born to Walter Harrison Buskirk and Ethyl Mae Hawk.

Helen met Lawrence Hubert Rolston on a blind date when she was in nurses training. Lawrence worked as an usher at the Smoot Theater, a movie theater in Parkersburg. Some times he would sneak her into the theater to see the movie. With the onset of World War Two, Lawrence left Parkersburg for the shipyards in Virginia. His work did not allow him to marry, so they drove to Elizabeth City, Pasquotank County, North Carolina where they secretly married on August 9, 1941. Later Lawrence purposely leaked information of his marriage to the shipyard so that he would be fired. As a shipyard worker, he could not join the military, and that is what he wanted to do.

In 1977 Helen's husband of 36 years moved out and took a small apartment. They formally divorced the following year.

In March of 2003 Helen suffered a major heart attack. She passed away a week later on March 26, 2003, two days before her 83 birthday. Per her wishes, she was cremated and her ashes spread under a large oak tree in the backyard of the home she loved.

She was survived by her four children. All her siblings, a sister and three brothers, had preceded her in death.
