Golden Erdle
Golden Erdle, 86, Terre Haute, died April 11, at Union Hospital, Terre Haute.
Born Dec. 30, 1921, in Seelyville, she was the daughter of Clarence and Tressie (Latta) Modesitt.
She was the sixth and final child of this marriage as her father, Clarence, died three weeks before she was born.
However, Clarence asked Tressie to give her that name if the baby was a girl as he has just seen a beautiful sunset shortly before his passing.
Raised in Seelyville, Golden graduated from Glenn High School in 1941 and always enjoyed attending the Glenn Reunions in later years.
After graduating, she worked at Eaton O'Neil Furniture Factory and Quaker Maid before marrying Joseph Erdle, of Burnett, on Dec. 2, 1942.
Golden continued working at Quaker Maid during Joe's service in the United States Army for the duration of World War II. Upon Joe's return from service, they bought a home in Seelyville, where they lived for 22 years, and raised a family before moving to their residence on Plum Street in Terre Haute.
Golden worked for several years at a number of Terre Haute businesses, the longest stints being at Recipe Foods for about five years and St. Anthony's Hospital for 14, but raising her family was her first priority.
She had a friendly, outgoing personality who some have characterized as "never having met a stranger," since she could strike up a conversation with anyone she encountered and had her own way of saying what was on her mind. Most all who met her would remember her and have a story about her. She was a unique child of God.
Golden was a true believer and dedicated Christian her whole life, and thoroughly enjoyed singing old time hymns in praise to her Lord. She is now reunited with her beloved husband of 64 years, as Joe died in 2007.
She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Marjorie Rowe, Chicago, Mardell Snyder, Brazil, and Dorothy Palmer, Seelyville, and brothers Melvin Modesitt, Seelyville, and Chester, who died in infancy.
Survivors include son Larry Erdle, Riverton, Ill., and son and daughter-in-law Ken and Nancy Erdle, Bloomington, Ind., six grandchildren and spouses, Lori and Roger Goben, Iowa, Lisa and Sean Mullins, Illinois, Sara and Tim Robinson, Texas, Emily and Russell Mendenhall, Illinois, Jeff and Christa Erdle, North Carolina, and Conrad Erdle, Illinois, eight great-grandchildren, Matthew Goben, Jenni Goben, Keegan Mullins, Kassidy Mullins, Russell Mendenhall Jr., Remi Mendenhall, Isabel Robinson and Alivia Robinson, and several nieces and nephews.
Services at 10:30 a.m., Monday, at the Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., Terre Haute, with Rev. Dwane Brown officiating. Burial will be in Highland Lawn Cemetery. There will be a visitation from 2-4PM Sunday.
