Frederick was born to Prince Willem (the Silent) of Orange-Nassau and his fourth wife Marie-Louise de Coligny.

On 04 April 1625, he married Emelie von Solms-Braunfels. They were the parents of 9 children-Willem II, Luise Henrietta, Henrietta Emelie, Elizabeth, Isabella Charlotte, Albertine Agnes, Henrietta Catherine, Hendrik Lodewijk, and Maria.

This stadtholder was a very sly and successfull strategist, who defeated several times the Spanish army. He was also the first Nassau who held court - although he was not a sovereign.
